Why go to Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal Archaeology and History Complex
Pointe-à-Callière opened on May 17, 1992, as part of the celebrations for Montréal's 350th anniversary, on the site where Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance founded Ville-Marie in 1642. The museum's Éperon Building rises on the foundations of a 19th century Royal Insurance Company building and overlays Montréal's first Catholic cemetery. Canada recognized the museum as a site of national importance in 1998, and Quebec designated it a national historic and archaeological site in 1999.
The complex now spans seven pavilions and structures. Visitors can walk through the First Collector Sewer, built in 1832 to carry the Little Saint-Pierre River underground, and can look down on the remains of Fort Ville-Marie, opened to the public in 2017, from a glass floor. Tourisme Montréal notes that the permanent exhibitions use multimedia technologies to bring the city's history to life. Adult admission for ages 31 to 64 is $30, taxes included.
