White quartzite hills and clear lakes on Georgian Bay, saved as a park after artists lobbied for it
Why go to Killarney canoe routes
Killarney Provincial Park lies on the Georgian Bay coast beside the village of Killarney, where the white quartzite ridges of the La Cloche Mountains rise above clear lakes. Painters A.Y. Jackson, Franklin Carmichael and A.J. Casson were drawn to the landscape and persuaded the Ontario government to protect it, and the park was established in 1964.
Destination Ontario points paddlers to canoe loops in the interior and sea kayak routes on Georgian Bay, with accessible campgrounds and lodges for newer trippers. Writing in Explore, Kevin Callan was boated up Baie Fine to the western border and then portaged between Artist, Muriel, O.S.A. and Killarney lakes. Ontario Parks lists 214 backcountry campsites and seven access points, booked online, and Killarney Outfitters in town rents canoes and kayaks.
