Why go to Temagami canoe country
Temagami is a canoe region on Highway 11 in northeastern Ontario, about a five-hour drive from Ottawa or the Greater Toronto Area. Lake Temagami alone has nearly 5,000 kilometres of shoreline and some 1,200 islands, and Ontario Parks says the area's backcountry parks hold roughly 600 kilometres of connected canoe routes within a 2,400 kilometre network.
Destination Northern Ontario lists trips from a 30 kilometre weekend loop on Cassels Lake out of town to the 100 kilometre Obabika Loop and a seven to 10 day Lady Evelyn River circuit, with floatplane drop-offs from Temagami. Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park protects old-growth white and red pine and Ishpatina Ridge, the highest point in Ontario, and six parks in the area require overnight camping permits.
