Why go to Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec

The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec was founded in 1920 as the first museum created by Quebec's provincial government, and its first building, the Musée de la Province, officially opened on June 5, 1933. It sits in Battlefields Park on the Plains of Abraham and holds more than 42,500 works of Québec art from the 17th century to the present. The complex grew to include the Charles-Baillairgé Pavilion, set in the former Québec City prison, and the Pierre Lassonde Pavilion, designed by OMA with Provencher_Roy and opened on June 24, 2016.

On October 21, 2026, the museum opened the Espace Riopelle, Michael Audain Pavilion, a three storey building of more than 5,000 square metres designed by the Québec firm Les architectes fabg. It houses about 100 works by Jean Paul Riopelle, and a circular gallery is given over to his 40 metre triptych Tribute to Rosa Luxemburg. The Art Newspaper put the project's cost at C$84 million. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and general admission for visitors aged 31 to 64 is $30 on site or $25 online.
