Winnipeg's national human rights museum, opened 2014, with alabaster ramps rising through 10 galleries to a tower
Why go to Canadian Museum for Human Rights
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights opened to the public on September 20, 2014 on the grounds of The Forks in Winnipeg, realizing a dream of the late philanthropist Israel Asper. It is the first national museum built outside the national capital region, and its building came from architect Antoine Predock, who won a design competition that drew entries from 63 firms in 21 countries.
Inside, about a kilometre of glowing alabaster ramps carries visitors up through 10 galleries across seven levels to the Tower of Hope, part of a building that Architect magazine describes with a 100 metre crystalline tower. Time Out says its exhibits explore human rights in Canada and around the world, and The Globe and Mail called it a significant Winnipeg institution in 2018. Adult admission is $23, and entry is free on the first Sunday of every month.
