Mi'kmaw canoe routes on lakes and the Mersey River, from day paddles to 48 km backcountry loops
Why go to Kejimkujik canoe routes
Kejimkujik National Park in southwestern Nova Scotia protects lakes and rivers that the Mi'kmaq have travelled by canoe for centuries, and visitors can paddle those same routes today. Albert Bigelow Paine wrote about a 1906 canoeing and fishing trip on these waters in his book The Tent Dwellers.
Day paddlers launch at Jakes Landing for a one to two hour trip up the Mersey River to Kejimkujik Lake and its islands, and canoes, kayaks and paddleboards can be rented there from Whynot Adventure. Longer trips include the 26 km Big Dam and Frozen Ocean loop over two or three days and the 48 km Peskowesk Lake system with thirteen portages. Backcountry campers register at the Visitor Centre, and reservations are recommended. Paddlers may see herons, loons, beavers and turtles.
