Why go to Jun I
Jun I has been a destination for Japanese food on Avenue Laurier Ouest for close to two decades. Chef Junichi Ikematsu, who came to Quebec in 1989, opened it with partners Ped Phimphrakeo and Jonathan Daunais, and the warm room was designed by Jean Pierre Viau, with modern touches added later by Pascale Girardin. Tastet calls it one of the best Japanese restaurants in Montreal, and Phimphrakeo told the site that guests come back for its consistency.
The kitchen's tasting menu moves through sushi, sashimi and maki along with other proteins, and Tastet called it a true gastronomic journey. During the pandemic the team added takeout through Ôkini, its sister shop for privately imported sake, house-made sauces and ready-to-eat dishes. Jun I placed #81 on Canada's 100 Best Restaurants in 2023.
