Kyoto-born sushi omakase on Rue de la Montagne, 25+ courses at dinner.
Why go to Okeya Kyujiro
Okeya Kyujiro is a premium omakase sushi counter on Rue de la Montagne, the Montreal branch of a house with restaurants in Kyoto and Ginza and sister counters in Toronto and Vancouver. Tastet describes a small, minimalist room seating about ten, mostly at counter seats facing the kitchen, with staff in kimono. Dinner runs at two seatings from Wednesday to Sunday, with lunch on weekends.
Dinner is a long run of mostly one-bite courses, more than 25 of them. Tastet praised the Tokyo-style cooking and knife work of chef-owner Takuya Matsuda, with courses of tuna, black cod, summer flounder, sea bream, lobster, clam, grilled wagyu and maitake tempura, a small ramen before dessert and a yuzu matcha cheesecake to finish, with premium sake to pair. Okeya Kyujiro placed #94 on Canada's 100 Best Restaurants in 2023.
