Reservations are recommended, though the three-wine Flight Club ($20) and wines by the glass take walk-ins, and the wine shop is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., to 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Why go to Vineland Estates Winery

Vineland Estates began as a Mennonite family homestead in 1845 and dates its winery to 1979, when German winemaker Hermann Weis planted Riesling vines from his Mosel winery. The estate covers 180 acres along the Niagara Escarpment, and its restaurant, carriage house and wine shop sit in restored historic buildings.

Wine Country Ontario singles it out for Riesling and Cabernet Franc made by winemaker Brian Schmidt. Tastings run from a $20 three-wine flight to vineyard and cellar tours, the restaurant serves lunch and dinner Wednesday to Sunday, and guests can stay overnight on the estate.
