UBC's anthropology museum in Arthur Erickson's 1976 building, with nearly 50,000 works and Northwest Coast poles

Why go to Museum of Anthropology at UBC

The Museum of Anthropology at UBC began in 1949 as a department within the university's Faculty of Arts, and on May 30, 1976 it moved into its current concrete and glass building by Canadian architect Arthur Erickson, on the traditional territory of the Musqueam people. It holds nearly 50,000 works, and Destination Vancouver describes its Northwest Coast First Nations displays as among the finest in the world.

The Great Hall reopened on June 13, 2024 after 18 months of seismic work that made MOA the first museum in Canada retrofitted with base isolation, with 25 isolators set beneath its concrete columns. Its Northwest Coast carvings, poles and weavings came back in displays revised with the First Nations communities and families whose belongings the museum holds. Adult admission is $26 for ages 19 to 64, and the museum stays open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays.
